Yes he did, yes he did.
For the last year, I have had a schedule that has been very accommodating to the skateboarder. Not working, and being able to justify that by saying “I’m in school”, has allowed me to skate more in the past year that the three years that preceded it. I have tried to make this year as constructive as possible, and if you ask me what I plan on doing now that I’m out in the real world, the only thing I can say is skateboard.
As bromantic as that sounds, I have no money. Now in order to skate as much as I have as of late, and If I wish to do it in one of the most expensive cities in the world. I have to accept that any work is better than no work. So as of Monday I started temp work as an office assistant in an insurance agency. I assure you, at thirty, having graduated college, the last thing I want to do is dress up in “Business Casual” attire and make sure that the diet coke is restocked at the end of the day in the company refrigerator.
Such is the life during the worst economy in eighty years. Pride does cometh before the fall of being above doing what one needs to in order to survive, by survive, I mean skate. In only three days of work I’m wondering where it all went wrong. Then, I remember that my best friends have been part of the 9 to 5 crowd for more than a decade and skating harder than I have in my most leisure of schedules. These friends do not make a dime off skateboarding, have to work jobs they would rather not, and juggle schedules so varied that it is incredible they skate at all, let alone put out at least three minutes of footage a year, for the past decade.
I don’t need to name names, you know who you are. You are numerous, you are varied, you have been gifted the chance in life to experience one of its gifts, that is skateboarding. It becomes more difficult to find time to skate, and those of you who do, there is something you know that the normal have no idea.
Tomorrow could be it, or it could be the start, be sure to get out and skate this weekend. Three day holiday weekends are becoming more scarce as the days pass, and being Independent is skating, Happy Independence Day!
